Car repairs stink! Last weekend Luke had to put new brakes on his Jeep to the tune of about $300. To make matters worse my vehicle had been running pretty bad and on Friday I couldn't put off doing something about it. When I was driving home from work I heard and felt something pop and all I could hear was air coming from the engine. Saturday it started idling really low and felt like it was going to stall any minute. I called our friend Ben, who is a licensed mechanic, to take a look at it. I had a hole in my EGR valve! He replaced that last night but the news just gets worse. I need to have my catalytic convertor replaced. Yikes! I'm supposed to get the estimate today. I'm nervous. So much for our economic stimulus check! We just spent it before we even had it.
Now, our question is how much longer do we keep putting money into my vehicle? In December I spent $500 and now it looks like another $500. Keep in mind we have a friend doing the work so it's cheaper than if I took it to any repair shop. Depsite my recent winnings in Vegas I'm not much of a gambler. Is it time to get rid of this vehicle? It's a 2001 Ford Escape with 120,000 miles on it. I think it's just at that point that we're going to have to put money into it. The brakes could be done right now, but after this repair that will have to hold out even longer. URGH. I bet that will be another $500. BUT, after spending all this money it could last forever. I guess I roll the dice.....

Car repairs are so difficult because they are so expensive and then if you have no control or no knowledge of car repairs it just adds so much stress! You're right, you're going to have to gamble on it. But next time, please be sure to buy HONDA! I'm sure you've heard me preach about this but I have only owned 2 Hondas (prior to getting married so consolidated now it is four) and I literally never had trouble with any of them. My civic that I just got rid of (due to baby #3) had 170,000 miles on it and we did have to do some repairs around the 160,000 but it was because I blew off getting some routine stuff done. I know they are more expensive but I think if you think of it as saving you time and money in the future, I bet the extra cost up front makes sense. Just something to think about :-)
